Albany, N.Y. -- The UMBC Volleyball team opened America East play by winning a five-set thriller at UAlbany on Friday night (25-14, 25-22, 19-25, 16-25, 15-8).
Claudia Llamas led the Retrievers with 18 kills and three blocks, including teaming up with
Grace Larrivee for the match-winning block in the fifth set.
Hannah Dobbs added 15 kills, nine digs and two blocks, while
Natalie Harris tallied nine kills and 10 digs in the victory.
Jalynn Brown made her first career start as a middle and picked up nine kills on .333 hitting, with three blocks, two digs, two aces and an assist.
Isabel Ostvig had 46 assists and 12 digs, and
Hannah Howard finished with a match-high 23 digs.
The Retrievers dominated the first set hitting .333 with 13 kills, and were even better in the second set as they hit .344 with 16 kills, but needed to score the final four points to win the set. The Great Danes took the next two sets before UMBC ended the fifth set on a 10-3 run.Â
The Retrievers head to Bryant for a 1 p.m. contest on Sunday.
