BALTIMORE --
Natalie Harris tallied a match and career best 19 kills in her first-ever start as the UMBC Volleyball team defeated visiting Georgetown in four sets (25-23, 19-25, 25-18, 25-22) on Sunday afternoon at The Peake.
The Retrievers improved to 4-3 on the season, while the Hoyas fell to 6-3. UMBC hit .292 in the match, tallied eight aces and held a 52-40 advantage in digs.
The first set was back-and-forth until a kill by
Hannah Dobbs and an attack error gave UMBC the final two points and the set win. The Hoyas used a 14-4 run midway through the second set to go up 24-15. UMBC scored the next four points, but Georgetown got a kill to win the set and tie the match.
The guests led 12-11 in the third but kills from
Alissa Grant and Harris, followed by an
Ema Djordjevic ace, a Grant and
Isabel Ostvig combo block and another Harris kill put the Dawgs up 16-12. GU ended the run with a kill, but Harris got a kill, followed by an attack error and a Grant solo block to make it 18-13 and put the set out of reach.
The Retrievers trailed 10-5 in the fourth before going on a run to tie the match at 11. The two teams then alternated points until a Grant kill and an attack error gave UMBC its first lead at 15-14. The Hoyas immediately tied it back up, but the Dawgs scored the next five, four of which came on kills by Dobbs to make it 20-15. The Hoyas eventually fought off two match points, but a kill by Harris ended the set and the match.
Dobbs was also spectacular, finishing with 18 kills, and Grant accumulated nine kills on .500 hitting with three blocks. Libero
Hannah Howard was sensational yet again, tallying 25 digs, six assists and four aces.
Isabel Ostvig had another double-double with 48 assists and 11 digs, while adding three blocks, two kills and two aces.
Grace Larrivee also had a career day, finishing with six kills on .417 hitting and two blocks, and
Claudia Llamas also contributed with nine kills.
The Retrievers head to Philly next weekend for road matches at Villanova and Temple.
