Martin Sets Program Record in 800 at Dani Palooza Last Chance Meet

HIGH POINT, N.C. - UMBC saw a number of strong performances as the outdoor track & field programs competed at the Dani Palooza Last Chance Meet hosted by High Point on Sunday. 

Jacob Martin broke the program record in the 800, winning the event with a time of 1:47.92, climbing above Andrew Smith (1:48.63), who held the record for the past 12 years. A trio of Retrievers all sped through the race, each setting a new personal best mark. Justin Banks finished second to Martin, crossing the finish line in 1:48.89, putting him third on UMBC's all-time performance list. Joey Ensor remains fifth on the all-time list after finishing fourth with a new PR time of 1:49.22. 

Toren Burr remains fourth on the all-time javelin list, but set another personal best mark as he placed second with a 66.85-meter throw. Burr jumps up to 31st in the Division I East Qualifying List with the throw. Teammate Scott Gersten also set a personal best mark, jumping up to fifth on UMBC's all-time list with a 60.49-meter throw. Gersten placed fifth at the event. 

The 4x100 relay group of Fred-Morgan Iheanacho, Martin Ojulu, Karell Clement, and Alim Raji ran the seventh-fastest 4x100 since 2010 with a time of 40.81. 

Ojulu also led a group of three top-10 finishers in the 200, pacing the group with a time of 20.91 and a second-place finish. Clement finished fifth (21.42), and Raji finished eighth (21.45). Clement also finished eighth in the 100 prelims with a time of 10.62. 

On the women's side, Winter Evans took fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 13.81 after setting a new personal best in the prelims with a time of 13.75 seconds. She remains second all-time behind Enazajah Young on the all-time list. 

Marie Abongwa took third (12.70m) in the shot put and sixth (53.09m) in the hammer throw for UMBC. Katie Schwaner finished second in the 800 with a time of 2:14.53, and Lilly Norcross (4:39.08) and Lily Strelecki (4:41.76) took sixth and seventh in the 1,500. 

UMBC had three top-five finishes in sprint events, led by Lily Bandy with a fourth-place finish in the 200 with a time of 24.06. Charliana Dacsota placed fourth in the 100 (11.84) and Dalyce Schmidt finished fifth in the 400 (56.40).
