Jesiah Carpenter continued to stay hot at the plate, blasting a three-run homer, but host Binghamton used a walk-off homer to defeat the UMBC Baseball team, 6-5, in ten innings on Friday.
UMBC (16-12, 5-2 AE) got on the board in the second after loading the bases with no outs, followed by
Derek Paris scoring on a double play. The lead became 2-0 in the fifth when
Jesiah Carpenter doubled, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a
Dylan Melton grounder.
After Binghamton (14-13, 7-3 AE) tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth, Carpenter hit his three run shot in the sixth to give the Dawgs a 5-2 lead. The Bearcats would tiew the game in the bottom of the seventh after a two-out error allowed the inning to continue and the hosts plated three unearned runs. It remained 5-5 until the bottom of the 10th when BU had its pinch-hit walk-off homer.
Eddie Sargent got the start and allowed just two earned runs in 5.1 innings, while
Kailen Hackmann didn't allow an earned run in 1.1 innings and
Brady Fox pitched the final 2.1.Â
Melton, Carpenter and
Anthony Mascuilli all had two-hit games, while
Danny Orr and
Danny Wyatt each drew a pair of walks. Orr, Paris,
Kyle Eddington and
Zach Hampton also had hits for the Dawgs. Melton and Mascuilli also each had a stolen base.Â
Game two of the series will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday.Â
