Last time out, UMBC used a 12-run fifth inning to break open a tight contest and defeat Fairfield, 15-4 (5), on Sunday at the Terrapin Invite hosted by Maryland.

The Retrievers would fall to the hosts 8-0 (6), in the finale later in the day.

UMBC 15, Fairfield 4 (5) | Game 1

Abbie Frisvold broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third with an RBI single that scored Catelyn Thrush, and Elena Clark-Wilson then escaped her second bases loaded jam of the game in the bottom half of the inning to keep it 1-0. Thrush then extended the lead in the top of the fourth with a two-run single to score Amya Lundy and Emily Riggs and make it 3-0. The Stags loaded the bases in the bottom half for the third time in four innings, but Clark-Wilson once again got out of it unscathed to keep it 3-0 before the bats exploded for the 12-run fifth.

Ella Squaires, Kenzie Nicholson and Frisvold all singled to load the bases with no outs, and after a flyout, Riggs drove in Squaires with a fielder's choice in which all runners ended up safe. Lundy then walked in a run and then two more scored on an error to make it 7-0. Maggie Frisvold walked to load the bases before Thrush was walked to force in another run. Squaires singled to score a run, followed by Nicholson getting hit by a pitch to force in a run and A.Frisvold then walked in another run. Fairfield made a pitching change, but Taylor Nicholson greeted the new pitcher with a grand slam to make it 15-0. The Stags got four unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth thanks to an error, but the Dawgs closed out the run-rule win.

Clark-Wilson picked up the first win of her career, striking out six and allowing seven hits in the complete game effort. Every Retriever scored at least one run, while Squares (3), Thrush (2), K. Nicholson (2) and A. Frisvold (2) each had multi-hit games.

Maryland 8, UMBC 0 (6) | Game 2

The game was scoreless until the fourth when Maryland plated three, before they walked it off with five in the bottom of the sixth. Amaya Carroll had UMBC's lone hit, and Riggs drew a walk.
