College Park, Md. – The UMBC Softball team opened the Terrapin Invitational on Friday evening with a 9-6 loss to Providence.
Taylor Nicholson scored Kenzie Nicholson and Abbie Frisvold on a fielding error in the first inning to put the Retrievers up 2-0. Abbie Frisvold hit a lead-off double in the third inning and scored on a ground out by Taylor Nicholson.
The Retrievers would load the bases in the sixth inning to try and cut a five run deficit. UMBC would score three runs with a Kenzie Nicholson single and Abbie Frisvold reaching on a fielder's choice.
Providence would score an extra insurance run in the bottom of the sixth and would retire the side in the seventh to secure the victory.
Emily Riggs had two hits and Amaya Carroll also had a hit in the loss.
The Retrievers will continue the Terrapin Invitational tomorrow with a rematch against Providence at 10 am and then face Syracuse at 12:30 pm.
