College Park, Md. – The UMBC Softball team split on Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 win over Providence in the Terrapin Invitational.
Jayda Koontz led the Retrievers on the mound picking up her first career win. Koontz pitched seven innings with seven strikeouts to secure the victory for the Retrievers.
Kenzie Nicholson scored first for the Retrievers in the first inning with a Providence wild pitch. Maggie Frisvold followed it up with a fielder's choice to score Abbie Frisvold before Koontz singled to score Emily Riggs.
Ella Squaires picked up an RBI in the fourth inning before scoring on a wild pitch to take a 5-0 lead.
Game 2 vs. Syracuse
Syracuse defeated UMBC 11-1 (5 innings) in the second game. Amya Lundy singled to second base to score Kenzie Nicholson, who had a double in the fifth inning.
Amaya Carroll and Abbie Frisvold also had a hit for the Retrievers in the loss.
The Retrievers will conclude the Terrapin Invitational on Sunday afternoon against Fairfield at 12:30 pm and Maryland at 3 pm.
