Game 1 | UMBC 2, UAlbany 0 F/7
The Retrievers got on the board in the second inning when
Kyle Eddington drew a two-out walk and came all the way around to score on a
Dylan Melton double. Eddington then made it 2-0 in the sixth when his sacrifice fly drove in
Danny Wyatt, who doubled and moved to third on a passed ball.
UAlbany threatened in the bottom of the seventh, using two singles and a walk to load the bases with two outs, but Robinson got a flyout to right to end the game. Robinson struck out five in the win as he improved his record to 4-0 on the season.
Melton was the only Retriever with multiple hits (two) while Wyatt and
Jesiah Carpenter had the other hits for UMBC.Â
Eddington and
Anthony Mascuilli each drew two walks, while Carpenter and Mascuilli each stole a base.Â
Game 2 | UMBC 8, UAlbany 3
UMBC got off to a quick start when Mascuilli hit a leadoff triple in the first and scored on an Eddington RBI groundout. The Great Danes had the tying run at third with one out in the second, but Sargent got a strikeout and a flyout to keep the 1-0 advantage for the Retrievers.
It remained 1-0 until the top of fifth when the Dawgs loaded the bases and
Danny Orr ripped a two-run double to push the lead to 3-0. Melton then made it 5-0 two batters later when he hit a two-out, two-run single up the middle. The hosts nearly responded in the bottom of the fifth after loading the bases with no outs after an error, but Sargent limited the damage with a strikeout, sacrifice fly and a fly out to help UMBC take a 5-1 lead into the sixth.
In the seventh, Orr hit a leadoff double,
Derek Paris reached on an error, and Melton was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. After a strike out,
Brooks Henderson drove in Orr with a sacrifice fly, an error plated another, and then Eddington scored Melton with a double to make it 8-1. UAlbany would add a single run in each the seventh and ninth to account for the 8-3 final.
Sargent allowed just the one unearned run on two hits, with five strikeouts and two walks in 6.0 innings of work to pick up his first victory of the season.
Kailen Hackmann and
Aidan Boice each struck out a pair in closing out the final three innings.Â
