Retrievers Head to Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday

BALTIMORE - UMBC men's lacrosse heads to Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. for a non-conference tilt. The Retrievers are 0-2 this season after a tight loss to Loyola (Md.) on Friday night. The Mount is 1-2 after a 19-5 loss at Lafayette on Saturday. 

Tuesday's meeting will mark the ninth straight season with a meeting between the programs in a series that dates back to 1974. UMBC is 29-2 all-time with three straight victories in the series. The Retrievers won last year's meeting 12-6 on February 19, getting a four-goal performance from Jordan Galloway. Connor Chick added four points (3 goals, 1 assist) and Corey Myers had a multi-goal game for UMBC. Alex Steers was dominant at the face-off X, winning 19-of-22 and picking up seven ground balls. Connor McMahon made 10 saves in the win. 


LAST TIME OUT
  • In a battle of Baltimore lacrosse programs, UMBC outscored Loyola 7-4 in the second half, but ultimately fell 12-8 on Friday night. UMBC falls to 0-2, while Loyola picks up its first win to move to 1-2. Despite a hot start from Loyola's Carson Hall, Alex Steers won 14-of-23 face-offs, picking up a game-high seven ground balls. Casey Pung caused four turnovers for the Retrievers, and Connor McMahon made 11 saves. McMahon has made 10 or more saves in both games this season, and now has six games in his career with double-digit saves. Jack Fish scored a pair of goal for the Retrievers.
  • Mount St. Mary's men's lacrosse fell to the Lafayette Leopards on Saturday by a 19-5 final. The team now stands at 1-2 this season. Brody Atkinson scored two goals, and Marcelo Carreiro and Owen Fasulka each scored once. Lafayette received six goals from the stick of John Heaney.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
  • Chris Grimaldi is the top goal-scorer for Mount St. Mary's, scoring eight goals in three games this season. The junior midfielder from Corning, N.Y., scored four goals against LIU and Queens, but was held scoreless against Lafayette on Saturday. 
  • Brody Atkinson did not appear in the LIU game, but returned to the field against Queens and has scored five goals in his first two games of the season. Atkinson had a hat trick against the Royals before adding two goals on Saturday. 
  • The offensive facilitator for the Mount has been Kevin Whitty, a senior from Kensington, Md. Whitty has two goals and 10 assists this season, handing out five helpers and scoring two goals against LIU. He added four assists in the win over Queens. 
  • Dylan Sander, a freshman from Bel Air, Md., leads the Mountaineers in caused turnovers with four, causing two against Queens. 
  • Bennett Wright has started all three games in goal, making at least nine saves in each contest and 12 apiece versus LIU and Lafayette. 

SCOUTING THE DAWGS
  • As they work to replace Galloway's production, 11 different Retrievers have scored a goal this season with four UMBC players logging multiple goals. At the top of the attack has been St. Bonaventure transfer Jake Kucinski, who has three goals and two assists this season. Kucinski had two goals and an assist versus Drexel on Feb. 13 and added another goal and an assist on Friday night versus Loyola. 
  • Fish, a freshman midfielder from Severna Park, Md., has scored in both games of his career, scoring multiple goals for the first time in his career on Saturday versus Loyola. 
  • The other two multi-goal scorers for UMBC this season have been Xander Maxwell (2 goals, 2 assists), and Jameson Coffman (2 goals). Maxwell, a 2025 America East All-Rookie selection, scored 11 goals and added nine assists as a freshman. Coffman, a SSDM, has been a force in the midfield this season and has added goals in both games. 
  • The team's top returning scorer from last season, Connor Chick, had handed out four assists and added a goal this season. The senior tossed out three assists against Drexel and added a goal and an assist on Friday versus Loyola. 
  • The Retrievers should have an advantage at the face-off X, as Steers has won 59 percent of his face-offs this season and has picked up 10 ground balls. 
  • Senior Casey Pung has caused five turnovers and picked up three ground balls after forcing away four turnovers on Friday night against the Greyhounds. 
  • 2025 America East Goalkeeper of the Year, and 2026 Preseason All-America East Selection, Connor McMahon, had made 21 saves so far this season, recording his fifth and sixth career games with 10 or more saves. 

ROSTER BREAKDOWN
2025 IN REWIND
  • UMBC opened up the season with victories over Drexel and Mount St. Mary's, beginning the year 2-0 for the second time in three seasons. The Retrievers dropped games to Towson and #13 Richmond before opening up America East play on March 15. 
  • The Retrievers opened up league play with victories over Vermont and UAlbany, taking wins by final scores of 10-7 and 13-12 in overtime. UMBC fell at Bryant, 12-7, its lone America East regular season loss. 
  • The Dawgs bonced back with wins over UMass Lowell and Binghamton at home before winning 19-11 at NJIT. UMBC finished off the regular season with a neutral site loss to Holy Cross before heading to Smithfield, Rhode Island for the America East Championships. UMBC fell 9-7 in a rematch of the regular season thriller with UAlbany. The Retrievers led 6-3 in the second, but UAlbany scored six of the final seven goals to come away victorious.
