BALTIMORE – Graduate student guard
DJ Armstrong Jr. calmly sank two free throws with 0.9 seconds remaining to give the UMBC men's basketball team a 75-74 come-from-behind victory against the New Hampshire Wildcats, in an America East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena. UMBC is now 6-2 at home and has won three straight contests for the first time this season.
Armstrong Jr., who had already made two game-winning shots earlier this season, paced the Retrievers with 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Junior guard
Jah'Likai King contributed 15 points, junior guard
Ace Valentine (12 points, four assists), and sophomore
Caden Diggs contributed 10 points.
UMBC (9-6, 2-0 AE) was down by as many as 11 points in the second half after it trailed 39-30 at intermission. The visitors shot a sizzling 57.1 percent (16-for-18) from the floor and held the Retrievers to a 38.5 percent clip (10-of-26) over the first twenty minutes.
Trailing 43-32 with 18:53 remaining in the contest, the hosts went on an 8-3 mini run to trim the deficit to 44-40 at the 16:52 mark after a fast break layup by graduate student forward
Josh Odunowo. However, New Hampshire answered with five straight points to grab a 49-40 edge after a layup by center Belal El Shakery (game-high 18 points, 13 rebounds) with 15:33 left.
UMBC changed the trajectory of the game as they responded by scoring 12 unanswered points over the next 3:16 to take a 52-49 advantage, their first lead since the 12:23 mark of the opening stanza. Odunowo and Valentine ignited the stretch with consecutive layups, reserve forward
Jose Roberto Tanchyn scored five consecutive points (layup, 3-pointer), and King completed the run with another triple.
Neither team led by more than three points over the final 12:17 of the contest, as there were 12 lead changes during that stretch.
Down the stretch, Robinson gave the Wildcats a 71-69 advantage with 1:19 remaining on a driving layup, but Armstrong Jr. answered on the next possession with a layup to even the score with 1:02 left.
Following a timeout, El Shakery hit one of two from the line to put New Hampshire up 72-71 with fifty-four seconds left. King misfired on the other end, but Diggs came up with a critical offensive rebound and made two clutch free throws after he was fouled by El Shakery with thirty-three ticks left.
El Skakery then scored inside with seven seconds left to provide the visitors with their final lead, 74-73.
After a UMBC timeout, the Retrievers set up a play for Armstrong Jr., and he was fouled on the perimeter before getting into shooting position. The whistle put him on the line for a one-and-one situation, but not before New Hampshire called a timeout. With ice water in his veins, the sharpshooter swished both attempts to put the Dawgs ahead.
The Wildcats attempted a baseball pass from under their basket, but time expired before they could get off a shot.
New Hampshire, now 0-10 on the road, fell to 4-12 overall and 0-3 in the conference.
UMBC committed a season-low four turnovers and shot 60.7 percent (17-for-28) in the second half.
The Retrievers will travel to Bryant on Thursday evening.
