UMBC Softball all-time great
Courtney Coppersmith ('19-'23) was bestowed another honor as she was named one of the Top 25 Non-P4 Pitchers of the Quarter-Century by D1Softball.
Coppersmith was the first-ever to win the America East Pitcher of the Year award four times in her career and she also finished her playing days at UMBC with the conference record in career strikeouts, while helping lead the Retrievers to four-straight America East Championships.
She threw 10 no-hitters, including three perfect games during her Retriever career, one of which was a 20-strikeout performance, notched 1,023 career strikeouts, and posted a 1.39 career ERA.
Became first player in school and America East (and 99th in NCAA DI History) history to reach 1,000 career strikeouts, and at the time of her final game ranked eighth in NCAA history with 11.36 strikeouts per seven innings Coppersmith was also outstanding off the field as she was the first student-athlete to win America East Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year three times in her career (21-23), won America East Softball Scholar-Athlete for four straight straight years and was the America East Woman of the Year in 2022.
She also finished her career as UMBC's all-time leader, saves (14), ERA (1.39), shutouts (34) and lowest opponent bating average against (.142).
"Courtney was definitely one of a kind," said new UMBC head Softball coach
Angie Nicholson. "And although I was not her coach, I was able to follow and watch her from a far. Courtney was able to put UMBC on the map in the softball world."
