  • Sophomore forward Gunder Miller drilled an electrifying goal from the midfield line to give the UMBC men's soccer team an unbelievable 2-1 victory over the UNC Wilmington Seahawks in the season-opener for both teams on Thursday evening.
  • The game appeared headed for a draw until Miller's tiebreaking score from distance pushed UMBC ahead 2-1 with 4:44 left. The play started after a turnover by the hosts in the midfield. Miller collected the loose ball and then blasted a winner into the open net with Seahawks' goalie Trey Smiley 15 yards off his line.
  • The contest was tied through the first 42 minutes until the Retrievers' Branden Johns netted the first career UMBC goal on an assist by Matteo Samori to take a 1-0 advantage into halftime.
  • The Seahawks evened the game in the 66th minute on a penalty kick by senior Ethan Newsome after Jake Shannon was taken down in the box.
  • Emigdio Tormo Lopez made four big saves to earn the victory in goal.
  • The Retrievers were selected fourth in the 2025 America East preseason poll and added eleven newcomers to the squad.
  • Six of the eleven newcomers hail from the state of Maryland.
  • Junior forward Ryan Calheira earned preseason All-Conference recognition following his impressive performance in the 2024 campaign. He was named to the Second Team, marking his first time receiving All-Conference honors. Calheira participated in all 19 matches, making 15 starts, and he tied for the team lead with five goals.
  • Anthony Adams (15-11-9) enters his third season as the head coach of the Retrievers.
  • The squad named Emigdio Tormo Lopez and Ricky Schissler as team captains for the 2025 season.  Tormo Lopez led the AE with 4.47 saves per game while Binghamton recorded a game-winning goal against Binghamton last season last September.
About Saint Peter's
  • Saint Peter's dropped a 2-1 decision against UMass Lowell on Thursday at Cushing Field,
  • The squad had solid scoring chances from senior captain Lex Vaughan. Vaughan led the team with four total shots, three of which were on goal. His three shots on goal were the most among all players in the game.
  • Kaloyan Somov netted the only goal for Saint Peter's, scoring in the 78th minute to cut the deficit to just one. Adam Holt and Tim Strele also had shots on goal in the match.
  • Saint Peter's brought a ton of new faces to Jersey City over the offseason, including three new players in the Spring and 19 additional players in the Fall.
  • While the Peacocks have a very different roster than they did after going 2-10-4 a year ago, they are returning key players Tim Strele and Lex Vaughan. Strele led the team in goals last season, despite dealing with an injury, and he expects to have an even more positive impact in 2025.
