BALTIMORE --
Jesiah Carpenter went 4-for-4 with three RBI, three runs scored and two stolen bases to lead the UMBC Baseball team to a 14-8 win over Manhattan in the second game of a Sunday doubleheader that clinched the series for the Dawgs. UMBC dropped a seven inning game one, 3-1.
After falling behind 2-0 in the first,
Nolan Kutney hit his first career homer in the second to cut the deficit in half. Carpenter would hit an RBI single a few batters later to tie, and
Anthony Mascuilli would hit a sacrifice fly to give UMBC a 3-2 lead.
The Jaspers would immediately respond and would eventually take a 7-3Â lead into the bottom of the fifth.
Leewood Molessa would score carpenter on a sacrifice fly to make it 7-4, before the Dawgs exploded for seven runs in the sixth to take the lead for good.Â
Kyle Eddington was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 7-5, after a tough luck line out double play, UMBC would tally six straight runs. Carpenter tied the game on a two run single, stole second and scored on a Mascuilli single to give the Retrievers an 8-7 lead. After an error extended the inning,
Danny Orr drove in two with a double and
Danny Wyatt made it 11-7 when he legged out an infield single.Â
Derek Paris hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh and Orr drove in another run on a grounder to make it 14-7. Manhattan got one run back in the eighth, but could get no closer.Â
Sam Bell picked up the win in relief, retiring all four batters he faced, while nick Remy pitched the final three innings for his fourth save of the season.
Wyatt had two singles in game one and scored on
Sergio Droz's sacrifice fly in the second inning. Manhattan hit a pair of solo homers in the top of the fifth to go ahead for good. Paris, Molessa and
Nick Pratt also singled in the contest for UMBC.
The Retrievers host second place NJIT next weekend.
