BALTIMORE --
Danny Orr went 2-for-4 and scored on a balk in the bottom of the ninth to give the UMBC Baseball team a 3-2 win in iths series-opener with visiting Manhattan on Friday night at Alumni Field.
Orr also had an game-tying RBI single in the fourth, while
Derek Paris gave UMBC a 2-1 lead in the seventh with an RBI single of his own. The Jaspers tied the game in the top of the ninth on a homer, before the Retrievers won it in the bottom of the inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, Orr had a lead-off single, moved to second on a
Matthew Best sacrifice bunt and then took third on an errant pick-off throw. He then scored on the one out balk.
Leewood Molessa and
Jesiah Carpenter also had hits for the Retrievers, while
Luke Buscaglia stole three bases off the bench.
Sam Bell was the opener for UMBC and allowed just an unearned run due to an error in 1.2 innings pitched.
Logan Wiley then worked a scoreless 3.1 innings, before
Ayden Gonzalez entered with two on and no outs in the top of the seventh. He got a strikeout and a double play to escape the threat.
Nick Remy worked the final two innings to move to 6-0 on the season.
Game two of the series will be at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
