Women's Basketball Wins for Fifth Time in Six Games; Defeats Defending Champion Maine, 71-53, on Saturday

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team continued to flex its muscles on defense and the offense used 22 fourth quarter points to take down defending America East Champion Maine, 71-53 on Saturday afternoon at The Peake. The Retrievers have now won four straight, and five of six overall.

Jordon Lewis led the offense with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Tiara Bellamy had 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Jaden Walker contributed 10 points and four rebounds. Talia Davis contributed 11 points and eight rebounds and Jaliena Sanchez had nine points and two assists in the victory. 

How it Happened:
  • Lewis opened the game with a three but Maine responded with a 10-0 run to force a UMBC timeout.
  • UMBC took advantage of six free throw opportunities and Bellamy ended the first quarter with a steal and layup to cut the deficit to 18-15 after one.
  • Lewis made a jumper to open the second quarter and the Retrievers scored six straight points to conclude an 11-0 run and to take a 21-18 lead
  • Both teams went back and forth, but the Retrievers took the lead for good midway through the second on a Yasmin Ott three to go up 28-25
  • The Retrievers would stay in front and lead 34-29 at the break
  • Walker opened the second half with a layup and the Retrievers had another strong quarter and open up a ten point lead, 49-39 UMBC.
  • Lewis opened the fourth quarter making both free throws and the Retrievers sealed the game with 22 fourth quarter points, 71-53 UMBC.
The Retrievers head to Binghamton for an evening game on Thursday at 6pm on ESPN+
