Women’s Basketball Shuts Down New Hampshire, 51-32

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team held visiting New Hampshire to just four points in both the first and third quarters in a dominating defensive effort en route to a 51-32 victory on Thursday night.

The Retrievers forced 25 UNH turnovers and recorded a season-best five blocks. 

Jordon Lewis led the offense for the Retrievers with 15 points, nine rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Jaliena Sanchez had 14 points, two rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Talia Davis had 10 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Jaden Walker recorded four points, eight rebounds, two assists, and two blocks. Carmen Yánez had six points, four rebounds, two assists, and three steals. 

 

How it Happened:

  • UNH opened with a layup but Sanchez made a layup and scored six straight points for the Retrievers, 6-2 UMBC.
  • Lewis then made three straight three's to extend the UMBC run to 15-0 before UNH made a layup to end the first quarter, 15-4 UMBC.
  • Walker opened the second quarter with a layup but UNH outshot UMBC 11-7 to end the first half, 22-15 UMBC. 
  • Sanchez opened the third quarter with a layup and the Retrievers had an 11-0 run in the third quarter to make it 35-19 UMBC.
  • UNH opened the fourth quarter with a layup but UMBC would score 16 points to seal the victory, 51-32.
 

The Retrievers return back to The Peake on Saturday against Maine at 2 p.m for Dawg Day featuring $1 hot dogs, fan chain giveaway, and a Mutts Gone Nuts Halftime performance.
