BALTIMORE – The host UMBC men's lacrosse team scored the first seven goals and defeated Mount St. Mary's by a 12-6 count at frigid UMBC Stadium on Friday evening.
"I'm real happy with the win tonight as there was no shortage of effort from our guys," said UMBC head coach
Ryan Moran. "The intensity and physicality were there. We can improve significantly by being smarter and staying out of the penalty box. I also want us to be more consistent throughout the game. We scored seven straight goals and then went through a lull, which allowed them to get back into the game. But we finished strong and got the win."
UMBC (2-0) received four goals from senior attackman
Jordan Galloway (assist) and three more from junior attackman
Connor Chick (assist). Sophomore midfielder
Corey Myers added a pair of goals, and senior
Kevin Doughty, freshman
Xander Maxwell, and freshman
Ayden Davis also found the back of the net.
Alex Steers was the most dominant player on the field as the junior went a career-best 19-for-22 on face-off opportunities.
Junior goalie
Connor McMahon was tremendous in the cage, making 10 saves on the evening.
The Retrievers led 5-0 after the opening quarter, as five different players hit the back of the next. Four tallies were unassisted, except
Nick Gutierrez's helper on Chick's first tally of the game, which made it 3-0 with 6:31 remaining.
Chick and Galloway teamed up on the second quarter's opening goal, and Myers finished the 7-0 run with 11:05 left in the half.
UMBC settled for an 8-4 halftime edge as the Mount went on a 4-1 to close the frame.
Mount (2-3) trimmed the deficit to 9-6 after an extra-man goal with 8:11 remaining in the fourth quarter. However, the Retrievers put the game away by scoring the final three goals.
Carter Quested led the Mountaineers with three goals, and Brody Atkinson contributed a pair of markers. Bennett Wright made 11 saves in goal.
UMBC held a 41-31 advantage in shots and went 22-of-23 on clears.
The Retrievers host beltway rival Towson next Friday evening.
