Men's Lacrosse Drops Home Contest Against Towson on Friday Night

BALTIMORE – Sophomore midfielder Corey Myers scored four goals, but the UMBC men's lacrosse team dropped a 17-10 decision against the Towson Tigers at UMBC Stadium on Friday evening.

Senior attackman Jordan Galloway added three goals and an assist, and freshman midfielder Ayden Davis contributed a goal and two assists.

UMBC (2-1) junior Alex Steers went 16-of-29 on face-offs and picked up six ground balls, while senior Trey Fleece added four ground balls off the bench.

Evan Boswell gave Towson a 1-0 lead midway through the opening quarter, but UMBC ripped off three straight tallies to claim a 3-1 advantage with 1:49 left in the frame.  Galloway set up Myers for the first goal, and then Galloway scored an extra-man goal after collecting a feed from freshman Xander Maxwell. Davis scored an unassisted goal to complete the run.

Towson (1-4) responded with six straight goals to grab a 7-3 advantage and never trailed again. Ronan Fitzpatrick had three goals during the burst, and Mikey Weisshaar added a goal and an assist.

The Retrievers built some momentum at halftime as Myers and Galloway scored two late goals to trim the deficit to 7-5 at the break.

The Tigers extended their lead to 10-5 with 9:30 left in the third quarter and built a 12-6 advantage after another tally by Fitzpatrick with 4:27 remaining in the third quarter.

Sophomore attackman Ryan Demato got one back for the hosts to cut the deficit to 12-7 with 3:46 remaining in the third quarter, but the Tigers got the next two to claim a 14-7 advantage early in the fourth quarter.

UMBC did not go away without a fight as the Dawgs ran off three straight goals by Myers, Galloway (from Davis), and Maxwell (from Davis) to inch within 14-10 with 7:22 left in the game.

The Retrievers had another opportunity to get even closer, but after controlling the face-off, they committed a critical turnover, and the visitors scored the final three goals to put the game away.

UMBC had a 34-33 edge in shots, but Towson had a 37-27 advantage in ground balls.

UMBC travels to Richmond next Saturday morning.
