Women’s Basketball Holds on to Defeat UMass Lowell, 53-51, to Move Into Third Place in America East

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team held on to defeat UMass Lowell, 53-51, on Thursday evening to close out the regular season portion of the home schedule at The Peake.

With the win the Retrievers improve to 14-11, 7-6 AE and move into a tie for third place in the Conference

Jordon Lewis led the offense with 15 points, seven rebounds, and three assists. Jaliena Sanchez had 11 points and four rebounds while Jaden Walker had eight points and led the team in rebounds with 11 and had two blocks. Talia Davis contributed nine points and Tiara Bellamy had six rebounds in the victory. 

 

How it Happened:

  • Walker opened the game making both free throws and the Retrievers took a 9-3 lead before the River Hawks went on a 6-0 run to tie it up 9-9.
  • The first quarter ended 15-15 after a free throw from UML
  • Lewis opened the second quarter with a jumper and both teams were equal before Sanchez made a three to close out the first half, 24-23 UMBC.
  • UML opened the second half with a layup but the Retrievers outscored the River Hawks 18-10 in the third quarter to increase the lead to 42-33.
  • UML opened the fourth quarter making both free throws and they went on a 9-0 run to tie the game up, 42-42.
  • Both teams kept it close throughout the fourth quarter but the Retrievers put up 11 points to win 53-51.
 

The Retrievers will make a quick trip to NJIT on Saturday for a 1pm game on ESPN +.
