Men's Lacrosse to Battle Mount St. Mary's in Home Opener on Friday Night

Retriever Bites

  • The UMBC men's lacrosse team scored five straight goals in the second quarter and went on to defeat the Drexel Dragons, 9-6, in their season debut last Saturday afternoon.
  • Corey Myers, Nick Gutierrez, and Connor Chick each scored a pair of goals to lead the Retrievers' attack.
  • Goalie Connor McMahon recorded 10 saves in 60 minutes to pick up the victory in his first career start.
  • Xander Maxwell distributed a team-high two assists.
  • Alex Steers went 10-of-17 on face-offs.
  • UMBC trailed 3-1 with 11:09 left in the second quarter, but rattled off five consecutive goals to take the lead for good. Gutierrez scored the final two goals of the burst. The Retrievers led 6-3 at halftime.
  • Drexel scored the first goal of the third quarter, but Ryan Demato and Myers produced back-to-back goals to extend UMBC's lead to 8-4 with 12:01 left in the quarter.
  • Chick put the game away with his second tally to make it 9-5 with just over a minute left in the contest.

Mount Update

  • The Mount was picked seventh in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's (MAAC) 2025 Men's Lacrosse Preseason Coaches' Poll.
  • Mount St. Mary's is 2-2 to open the season after wins against Queens and Wagner and losses to LIU and St. Bonaventure (OT).
  • Sophomore Brody Atkinson (30 goals in 2024) has already produced 11 tallies this season.
  • Jack Smith leads the Mount with 14 points (7 goals, 7 assists).
  • Carter Quested has added eight goals and a pair of assists. He also leads the squad with 11 ground balls.
  • Bennett Wright has allowed 10.42 goals per game with a .567 save percentage.

The Series

  • UMBC leads the all-time series, 28-2.
  • The Retrievers have never lost at home against the Mount.
  • Mount defeated UMBC 9-8 in 2022 and 16-7 in 2018.
  • UMBC has won five of the last six contests against the Mount.
  • Last season, UMBC senior attackmen Brian Tregoning and Mike Doughty enjoyed career games as the Retrievers outscored host Mount St. Mary's, 11-1 over the final 19 minutes and triumphed 18-6 at Waldron Family Stadium.
  •  Tregoning netted a career-best six goals, while the elder Doughty brother tallied career highs in points (7) and assists in the contest.
