Philadelphia, PA. - The UMBC men's lacrosse team scored five straight goals in the second quarter and went on to defeat the Drexel Dragons, 9-6, in their season debut on Saturday afternoon.
Corey Myers,
Nick Gutierrez, and
Connor Chick each scored a pair of goals to lead the Retrievers' attack.
Goalie
Connor McMahon recorded 10 saves in 60 minutes to pick up the victory in his first career start.
Xander Maxwell distributed a team-high two assists.
Alex Steers went 7-of-14 on face-offs.
UMBC trailed 3-1 with 11:09 left in the second quarter, but rattled off five consecutive goals to take the lead for good. Gutierrez scored the final two goals of the burst. The Retrievers led 6-3 at halftime.
Drexel scored the first goal of the third quarter, but
Ryan Demato and Myers produced back-to-back goals to extend UMBC's lead to 8-4 with 12:01 left in the quarter.
Chick put the game away with his second tally to make it 9-5 with just over a minute left in the contest.
The Retrievers will host Mount St. Mary's on Friday evening in their home opener at 6:00 p.m.
