Women's Basketball Uses Big First Quarter to Win at UMass Lowell

Lowell, Mass. -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team started the game on an 18-0 run en route to 56-48 victory over host UMass Lowell on Saturday afternoon. 

Jaliena Sanchez led the Retrievers offense with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Jaden Walker had 11 points and seven rebounds. Talia Davis added six points, and Carmen Yánez had eight points, four rebounds, four assists, and three steals. Jordon Lewis had seven points and seven rebounds. Tiara Bellamy had six rebounds in the victory.

How it Happened:
  • Sanchez opened the game with a three and the Retrievers went on a 18-0 run before UMass Lowell made a layup with 0:55 left in the first quarter.
  • Walker would make a three at the buzzer to end the first quarter 23-4 UMBC.
  • Sanchez started the second quarter with a free throw, before the River Hawks would go on a mini run, but it was still a 34-17 UMBC lead at the half
  • Sanchez opened the third quarter with a tip-in but the River Hawks would go on a 9-0 run at the end of the quarter and cut the UMBC lead to 46-33.
  • Lewis opened the fourth quarter with a tip-in and UMass Lowell outscored the Retrievers 15-10, but UMBC held on for the 56-48 win
The Retrievers return home to The Peake for a Thursday evening game at 6:30pm against New Hampshire and a Saturday afternoon game at 2pm against Maine. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
