BOSTON - After a pair of standout performances, both
Hannah Howard and
Claudia Llamas were honored with America East weekly awards, the Conference announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Llamas was named the America East Player of the Week after she led the team in kills and averaged 3.56 per set on the week, including a career-high 19 kills on .316 hitting in only four sets at Binghamton.
Howard earned her third Defensive Specialist of the Week honor as she averaged 5.11 digs per set, and tallied 25 in only four sets at Binghamton.
The Retrievers step out of Conference play for a rematch with Howard on Wednesday at 6 p.m. in D.C. UMBC won a thrilling five-setter between the two on 9/20 at The Peake.
Last time out, the Dawgs dropped the first two sets and found itself down 24-22 in the third set before mounting an incredible rally to defeat visiting Bryant in five sets (15-25, 15-25, 27-25, 25-21, 15-4) on Sunday afternoon at The Peake.
After the comeback in the third set, the Retrievers cruised the rest of the way, including opening the fifth by scoring the first 11 points of the set.
Jalynn Brown had a match-high 18 kills and added 11 digs, while Llamas continued her stellar play by adding 13 kills, six blocks and four digs.
Jada James came off the bench in the second set and finished with a 10 kill and 13 dig double-double.
Laura Fuehrer had nine blocks and five kills, it is the fourth time this season that she has recorded at least nine blocks.
Izzy Ostvig added 21 assists and 12 digs, while fellow setter
Serin Maden had 27 assists and four aces, and was the server during the decisive 11-0 run to start the fifth set.
Howard added 21 digs and three assists and
Helen Frankovich tallied four kills on .500 hitting with four blocks.
Scouting Howard:
- In a nail-biting five-set showdown at Burr Gymnasium, the Howard University volleyball team fell, 3-2, to conference foe Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Sunday afternoon.
- The loss marked Howard's fifth straight match pushed to a decisive fifth set.
- Rya McKinnon posted her fifth double-double of the season with 21 kills and 13 digs, anchoring the Bison's effort
- Both teams finished with 10 total blocks and 58 digs.
- The Bison also recorded 54 assists, including 45 from Reeves, to UMES's 45.
