Big Second Half Pushes NJIT Past Women’s Basketball

BALTIMORE -- Jaliena Sanchez had a team-high 17 points, but visiting NJIT used a big second half to defeat the UMBC Women's Basketball team, 83-55 on Thursday night at The Peake.

The Highlanders (5-10, 2-0 AE) outscored the Retrievers 48-21 in the second half to blow open a one point game at the half. 

How it happened:
  • Carmen Yánez made a layup to start things off before NJIT made a jumper
  • Sanchez made six straight points before NJIT went on a 10-0 run, 11-9 NJIT.
  • UMBC went on a 7-0 run but both teams exchanged a handful of threes to make it 21-20 NJIT at the end of the first quarter.
  • Tiara Bellamy opened the second quarter with a layup but teams went back and forth both with 14 points to end the first half 35-34 NJIT.
  • Jordan Lewis opened the second half with a layup with both teams exchanging buckets but the Highlanders went on a 6-0 run with 4:29 left in the third quarter to take a 52-42 lead.
  • The third quarter ended 57-46 as NJIT outshot UMBC 22-12.
  • NJIT opened with a layup and continued to pull away from there.

The Retrievers hit the road for the first time for America East play at New Hampshire on January 16 and then at Maine on the 18th. Both games will be streamed on ESPN+.
