Women's Basketball Drops America East Opener to Binghamton

The UMBC Women's Basketball team dropped a 60-50 decision to visiting Binghamton on Saturday in its America East opener.

How it happened:
  • UMBC missed its first five shots of the game, but Jordon Lewis and Jaliena Sanchez drained back to back threes to give the Retrievers an 8-7 UMBC.
  • BU went on a 7-0 run, but UMBC then answered with a 7-0 run of its own before a pair of free throws for the guests made it a 16-16 tie after the first quarter
  • Binghamton opened the second quarter with a layup before Yasmin Ott made a jumper.
  • The Bearcats would then go on a 8-0 run to make it 31-21 before the Retrievers ended the first half with a three from Carmen Yánez and a jumper from Lauren Thompson to cut the deficit to 31-26 at the half
  • Binghamton opened the second half with a jumper before Williams answered with a jumper of her own, but the Bearcats went on a 10-0 run to take a 43-28.
  • After a media timeout, Thompson hit a three and the Retrievers went on a 7-0 run before the Bearcats responded with five points, and the third quarter eventually ended with Binghamton up 50-38
  • Williams opened the fourth quarter with a free throw followed up with a layup at 6:40, to cut the deficit to 50-41, but Bing responded with a 7-0 run to put the game away. 
  • Lewis led UMBC with 11 points, while Laura Lacambra and Thompson each tallied 8 points in the loss
  • Williams grabbed a game-high ten boards and Yánez had seven assists.



The Retrievers return to action on Thursday, January 9 at The Peake for a 6:30 p.m. game against NJIT on ESPN+.
