Program Record 3,108 Fans See Women's Basketball Stun Mid-Major No.25 UAlbany

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team shocked Mid-Major No.25 UAlbany, 71-59, on Thursday in front of a program record 3,108 fans.

UMBC led UAlbany (16-4, 6-1) the entire contest, marking the first time all season that the Great Danes did not hold a lead in a game. UAlbany, who had not given up more than 55 points in a game in America East play, entered the game at No.102 in NET and was a Quad 3 team, making both highest ranked victories the Retrievers have ever pulled off.

Talia Davis led the offense with a career high 21 points and nine rebounds. Jordon Lewis contributed seven rebounds. Jaliena Sanchez added 13 points and Lauren Thompson had 10 points. 

Jaden Walker recorded nine points and four rebounds while Carmen Yánez had eight points and five assists in the victory. 

How it Happened:
  • Walker opened the game with a jumper and the Retrievers went on a 10-0 run.
  • UMBC eventually led 23-9 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Great Danes opened the second quarter with a 6-0 run but Lauren Thompson scored the first seven points for the Retrievers, 30-20 UMBC.
  • The Retrievers ended the first half with a buzzer beater three from Yánez to make it 42-27 UMBC.
  • Davis opened the third quarter making both free throws and the Retrievers continued to outscore the Great Danes 17-15, 59-42 UMBC.
  • Sanchez opened the fourth quarter with a layup, UAlbany made a run, but the Retrievers hit their free throws to secure the win, 71-59.

The Retrievers are back at The Peake this Saturday against Vermont at 2 p.m.
