Box Score BALTIMORE – The UMBC men's soccer team turned in a dominant effort on Friday night at Retriever Soccer Park, blanking the Saint Joseph's Hawks by a score of 4-0.
The Retrievers' (3-1-2) defense held the visitors (1-4-1) without a quality scoring chance until the contest's final minutes. The hosts fired 25 shots compared to just 11 by the Hawks.
"I thought tonight was the most complete game we've had so far this season," said UMBC Head Coach
Anthony Adams. "When you put together a good performance, it involves defending, and I think a lot of our attack starts off our press, and we saw that tonight."
Junior defender
Lasse Kelp gave UMBC the only goal they would need when he tapped in a loose ball along the back post following a corner kick just 16:54 into the match. Senior forward
Alek Wroblewski and graduate student defender
Hans Nesheim were credited with assists. Nesheim now has a team-high four helpers on the season and is tied for the America East Conference lead.
The game opened up for UMBC's offense in the second half, as the Retrievers scored three unassisted goals and had numerous other quality looks on goal.
In the 63rd minute,
Ty Stroud gave the hosts an insurance marker when he carried the ball into the center of the pitch and ripped a low shot past Hawks' goalie Lars Haavie from 25-yards out. It was the first career goal for the senior midfielder.
Junior forward
Robbie Ryerson followed just fifty-nine seconds later with a blast to the upper left corner after collecting a deflection just outside the top of the box.
The Retrievers finished out the scoring in the 70th minute on freshman forward
Matteo Samori's first career goal. Samori gathered in a rebound after
Joseph Picotto bounced a shot off the left post.
"Our goal tonight was to have a good team performance," Adams added. "It was nice to get goals from four different guys, and some younger guys are starting to shine. I was happy for Matteo {Samori} to get a goal."
Junior goalie
Emigdio Tormo Lopez made three saves to earn the clean sheet.
UMBC will travel to American on Tuesday evening.
