DAWG BYTES
  • UMBC head men's soccer coach Anthony Adams has unveiled a highly anticipated schedule for the 2024 season. Seven of their opponents have participated in the NCAA Tournament over the past two seasons. With 11 of their 17 games set to take place under the lights at Retriever Soccer Park, including a thrilling four-game home stand to kick off the season, the team is primed and ready for the challenge.
  •  This season is not just about the matches. The Dawgs will also be commemorating some significant milestones. Join us as we pay tribute to the 25th anniversary of the 1999 Northeast Conference Championship squad and the 10th anniversary of the 2014 squad that made it to the NCAA College Cup Semifinals. Both teams will be honored and celebrated at halftime of the Vermont game on October 26. The campaign will open on Thursday, August 22, when local rival Maryland visits RSP.
  • The Retrievers welcome 11 newcomers, including six who hail from Maryland.
  • The UMBC men's soccer team was picked to finish fourth in the 2024 #AEMSOC Preseason Coaches Poll. In addition, senior midfielder Jago Lott and junior defender Lasse Kelp were named to the Preseason All-Conference Team.
  • Adams has announced three team captains for the 2024 campaign. Rising junior Lasse Kelp, senior Jago Lott, and graduate student Hans Nesheim have all been selected by their peers."All three of these gentlemen are great representatives of UMBC Soccer," Adams stated. "They are all high character, hardworking, selfless people that will do a tremendous job leading the Retrievers this fall." Kelp, a defender, who scored crucial game-winning goals against America East rivals UAlbany and Vermont last season, has been a key player for the Retrievers. Following the season, he earned America East First Team accolades and was selected to the All-Northeast Region Third Team. In addition, the Bonn, Germany product was selected as a Third Team Academic All-American. Kelp has made 34 starts for the Retrievers over his first two seasons.
  • Midfielder Jago Lott made 16 starts in 2023 and distributed three assists, two of which came in the season-opening win at George Mason. The Somerset, United Kingdom native has started 55 of the 56 games he's appeared in and has totaled three goals and 12 assists. Lott was named to the 2021 America East Fall Honor Roll.
  •  Hans Nesheim, who has started all 62 games that he's participated in, is a key player on the defensive end of the field. The Haugesund, Norway native was an America East Second Team pick in 2022 and was also selected to the United Soccer Coaches Northeast Conference Third Team. He also earned College Sports Communicators Academic All-District honors in 2022 and was selected to the America East All-Academic Team.

 A GLANCE AT THE TERRAPINS
  •  Maryland went 4-8-3 overall and were 0-6-2 in the Big Ten Conference last season. Sophomore forward Luke van Heukelum is the team's leading returning scorer with 13 points (4 goals, 5 assists).

ALL-TIME SERIES
  • The Retrievers are 3-13-3 in the all-time series.
  •  UMBC is 2-3-2 against the Terrapins over the last seven contests dating back to the 2000 season.
  •  In their last meeting, UMBC dropped a 4-3 decision in College Park on Aug. 29, 2021. Ryan Becher scored two goals in a span of just over three minutes to give the Retrievers a chance with just under five minutes left.
