Daniels and Tien Join Women's Basketball Staff

BALTIMORE -- Reggie Daniels and Maggie Tien have joined the UMBC Women's Basketball coaching staff, head coach Candice Hill announced on Tuesday morning.

Daniels comes to the Hilltop after spending last season as the head coach at Divison II Chestnut Hill. In his lone season at the helm, Daniels guided the Griffins to a 20-9 record and their first ever Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference Tournament Championship game appearance.

Coach Hill on Coach Daniels: "I am really looking forward to working with Reggie. He brings a ton of experience from all different levels, recently being a head coach. Reggie is a tireless recruiter and constantly looking for ways to approach winning. I am excited to welcome him back to the DMV area."

Coach Daniels on 'Why UMBC?':  "I am grateful, humbled, and blessed to be apart of Head Coach Candice Hill's staff. When I was presented the opportunity to come back home to Baltimore and serve the UMBC community, I knew it would be a great fit. Coach Hill is one of the best in the business and I am excited to help build this historic program and recruit the DMV. UMBC is a fantastic university with a great reputation. I am looking forward to being apart of the Retriever Community. Go Dawgs!"

A 2015 graduate of Hood College, Daniels joined Chestnut Hill after serving as an assistant women's basketball coach at Binghamton University in 2022-23.  At Binghamton he served as the program's recruiting coordinator along with coordinating individual workouts and player development.

Prior to joining the Bearcats, Daniels was the head coach at Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham during the 2021-22 season. He oversaw all aspects of the Devils' program during his tenure.

The previous two seasons (2019-21), Daniels was an assistant coach at Stevenson University. During that span, he helped lead the Mustangs to 20 wins as well as appearances in the semifinal round of both the MAC Commonwealth and ECAC Tournaments.

From 2017-19, Daniels was a graduate assistant coach for the women's basketball team at his alma mater. With the Blazers, Daniels assisted in all areas, including recruiting, game video breakdown, game planning, travel logistics and social media. Daniels also worked with the Maryland Belles 2020 AAU team during the 2018-19 season.

Before entering the college coaching level, Daniels was a coach at Patterson Mill High School from 2015-17. He served as the head coach of the boys' JV team and as an assistant on the boys' varsity team during that time.

Daniels played at Hood College from 2011-15. He ranks second in program history with 136 blocks and 105 games played.

Tien joins UMBC as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator after spending the past three seasons at Mount St. Mary's.

Coach Hill on Coach Tien: "I am thrilled to have Maggie on my staff! Maggie is an elite recruiter and great at building relationships. She also takes great pride in mentoring student athletes and preparing them for life after basketball. I am confident in Maggie's abilities to recruit, develop and I know she will help us win and move this program forward"

Coach Tien on 'Why UMBC?': ""I am incredibly grateful to be a part of the Retriever family. A heartfelt thank you to all who've been there throughout my journey. The love and support means the world to me. I am beyond grateful to work alongside Coach Hill and learn from one of the best. Time to elevate the Retrievers to the next level."

Initially the Director of Operations for two years, Tien earned a promotion to Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator ahead of the 2023-24 season.

Originally from nearby Gaithersburg, Tien competed for Hood College and Washington Adventist as an undergraduate. As a senior for the Shock, she was an almost exclusive three-point threat, with 138 of her 159 attempts coming from beyond-the-arc. Her 30.4 shooting percentage from downtown helped guide Washington Adventist to an 18-12 mark during the 2019-2020 season.

Her career at Hood spanned two seasons, participating in 37 games with 34 starts. In her junior season with the Blazers, Tien ranked second on the team with 9.4 points and an average of 2.52 treys per contest. That season also saw her reach a career high of 20 points, going 7-for-14 from the floor in a game with Lebanon Valley.
