Little Falls, N.J. --
Dawson Baracani hit a tie-breaking two-RBI single in the top of the 13th, and
Sam Downs pitched the final 5.1 innings of scoreless relief as the UMBC Baseball team won a thrilling, 12-9, 13-inning marathon on Saturday night at NJIT.
Baracani went 3-for-5 with three RBI, while
Luke Trythall and
Danny Wyatt each had three hits, three runs scored and two RBI, as every UMBC starter recorded at least one hit.
How It Happened:
- NJIT scored a run in each of the first two innings to go up 2-0
- UMBC took the lead in the top of third when Trythall ripped a bases loaded two-RBI single and Wyatt followed with an RBI single of his own
- Kyle Eddington then drove in two with a single to make it 5-2, before a Derek Paris double made it 6-2
- Matthew Best wrapped-up the scoring for the inning with an RBI ground out to make it it 7-2
- In the fourth, Wyatt would hit an RBI triple and then scored on a Baracani single to make it 9-2
- The Highlanders quickly got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth to make it 9-5
- NJIT then plated three in the seventh, and tied the game with an unearned run in the eighth, but Downs entered and stranded the bases loaded
- The game remained tied at nine until the top of the 13th, when Anthony Swenda started the inning by reaching on an error
- Trythall then walked, and another error loaded the bases for Baracani, who hit a 1-0 pitch back up the middle to break the deadlock
- Nico Ong would bunt the two runners over, and Paris would plate the 12th run with a sacrifice fly
- Downs needed just seven pitches to retire the side in the bottom half of the inning to close out the win
The rubber match of the series will be Sunday at 1 p.m.
