Vestal, N.Y. - Junior attackman Jordan Galloway recorded his fourth hat trick of the season, but the visiting UMBC men's lacrosse team fell at Binghamton, 21-10, in an America East Conference contest on Saturday afternoon at Bearcats Sports Complex.
Galloway, who has 22 tallies on the season, scored all three goals in the third quarter. Senior attacker Allen Hockenberry added two goals and an assist, while classmate Mike Doughty contributed a goal and a team-high three assists. Doughty now has a league-high 31 assists on the season and has distributed multiple helpers in five straight contests. Senior Jayson Tingue played all sixty minutes in the cage and made 11 saves.
UMBC (4-5, 3-2 America East) trailed 2-1 midway through the first quarter, but senior midfielder Dane Hall scored an unassisted goal, and senior attacker Brian Tregoning (assisted by Hockenberry) followed to spot the Dawgs a 3-2 edge with 4:01 left in the opening frame.
The Bearcats (6-5, 4-1 America East) responded with three consecutive goals to take the lead for good, 5-3, with 10:08 left in the opening half.
Doughty scored his eighth marker of the season to cut the deficit to 5-4 at the 7:25 mark, but the hosts scored the final four goals of the quarter to establish a 9-4 lead at intermission.
UMBC was still within striking distance, 11-6, with 9:00 left in the third after Galloway scored his first two goals of the afternoon. Binghamton, however, went on a 5-1 run to widen their lead to 16-7, and the Retrievers never recovered.
The Retrievers will host NJIT next Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.
