BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore
Nick Gutierrez capped a late rally, scoring with 12 seconds in overtime as the Retrievers defeated defending America East champion Bryant, 13-12, on the leagues opening weekend.
Junior midfielder
Jordan Galloway scored a career high five goals, including the game-tying goal with 3:29 remaining.
UMBC improved to 2-3 overall, while Bryant dropped to 4-3.
"I'm really proud of how the guys prepared throughout the week," said Head Coach Ryan Moran. "They went out and executed the game plan."
"I knew we had to go the cage," said Gutierrez, of his first-ever overtime game-winning goal. "I realized we had numbers, took my chance and finished the game."
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Retrievers trailed, 12-9 with 4:54 remaining in the fourth quarter, but Galloway started the run by tallying an unassisted goal. After senior face-off specialist Zach Dudley won the ensuing face-off, senior attackman Brian Tregoning bounced home a goal 34 seconds later to bring the Retrievers to within 12-11. After another UMBC face-off win and a long possession, Galloway beat his defender to the inside and the netminder to knot the score at 12-12.
- UMBC senior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue made a pair of stellar saves in overtime, the second of which came with 33 seconds reaming. His clearing pass led to a semi-fast break opportunity. Gutierrez fed and took a return pass from junior midfielder Josh Tang, worked towards the center of the field and bounced a shot past goalkeeper Teagan Alexander to set off a wild black-and-gold celebration.
- UMBC enjoyed only one other lead in the game at 3-2 at the 6:52 mark of the first quarter.
- Bryant led, 4-3 after 15 minutes and 6-5 at halftime.
- The Bulldogs extended the advantage to 8-5 just 2:01 in the third quarter. But UMBC staged its first second half rally by reeling off three consecutive goals to tied the score at 8-8.
- With his side trailing, 8-7, after 45 minutes, freshman midfielder Ryan Demato recorded his first career goal just 1:21 into the fourth stanza to knot the score.
- Bryant went on a 4-1 run in the nine-goal period to build the 12-9 advantage with 9:01 remaining in regulation.
