Blount's 33 Points Not Enough as Women's Basketball Falls at UMass Lowell

Lowell, Mass. – Anna Blount scored a career-high 33 points and added 13 rebounds, but the UMBC Women's Basketball team fell to host UMass Lowell, 71-60, on Thursday night.

Blount's 33 points were the most by a Retriever since 2019, and her 13 boards tied a career high.

  • The teams traded buckets for most of the first quarter, with Blount scoring UMBC's first six points.
  • The hosts led 16-13 after the first quarter despite Blount's nine points and five rebounds
  • UMBC went on an early run in the second quarter as a Carmen Yánez layup gave the Dawgs a brief 19-18 lead. 
  • Blount scored the next six points for UMBC, but the River Hawks ended the half on an 11-2 run to take a 36-27 lead into the half
  • Blount finished the first half with 17 points, on 8-11 shooting, and eight rebounds
  • All Retrievers besides Blount combined to shoot 2-20 from the field in the first half
  • UMBC continued to struggle from the field in the third, starting just 2-11 from the field, with Laura Lacambra making both of those baskets
  • UMass Lowell continued to extend the lead, before a late Blount layup cut the deficit to 60-45 after three quarters.
  • The Retrievers opened the fourth on a 7-1 run, with a Sanchez three to cut the deficit to 61-52 and force a UML timeout.
  • It became an 11-2 run to start the quarter on back-to-back buckets from Blount that cut the deficit to 62-56 midway through the fourth
  • The River Hawks did not make a basket for the first 8:30 of the fourth, but made their free throws to keep UMBC at arms length
The Retrievers stay on the road as they head to defending champion Vermont for a 2 p.m. matchup on Saturday.
