Blount Pours in 17, but Retrievers Fall to UAlbany


BALTIMORE – Anna Blount hit a career-high three three-pointers, en route to 17 points, but the UMBC Women's Basketball team fell to league-leading UAlbany, 69-55, on Saturday afternoon at The Peake.
  • Both teams struggled to get on the board as it was tied at 2 nearly the first four minutes
  • After Blount hit a tough runner, UAlbany answered with a layup before Blount knocked down a transition three to put UMBC up 7-4 midway through the first.
  • The Great Danes would end the quarter on a 10-0 run, including a buzzer-beating layup, to take a 14-7 lead into the second quarter
  • It became a 16-0 run before a Blount free throw with 7:43 left in the second ended both the run and UMBC's 7:40 scoreless streak.
  • Blount continued to keep the Retrievers offense going with her eighth straight point on a layup with 6:30 left in the half to cut the UAlbany lead to 22-10
  • Lacambra would hit a layup to trim the deficit to 10 before Jaliena Sanchez hit a step-back jumper to make it 22-14 with three minutes left.
  • Grace Ceseretti drained a three with just seconds left to send UMBC into the half down 22-17.
  • Overall the Retrievers held UAlbany scoreless for the final 6:46 of the half
  • Blount opened the second half with a free throw to make it just a four point game
  • The Great Danes would respond with five straight before Trinity Palacio answered with a with five straight of her own to bring UMBC within 27-23 less than three minutes into the the third
  • The teams would continue to trade baskets before a quick 8-2 UAlbany spurt put them up 41-29
  • Sanchez would hit a three, but the Great Danes would respond with their third straight 3 to go back up 12 and force a UMBC timeout with 2:38 left in the third.
  • UAlbany was on fire from deep in the third, hitting five of its first seven shots from beyond the arc and took a 50-36 lead into the fourth quarter
  • Blount hit a three, then got a steal and found Carmen Yánez for a layup to cut the deficit to 52-41 early in the final frame. 
  • The Great Danes got a layup, but Blount hit another three to make it just a 10 point game.
  • UMBC, however, would get no closer than that as UAlbany pulled away late.

Blount added four points, four rebounds and four steals as well.

Sanchez had 12 points and Lacambra added 10 for the Retrievers.

UMBC hits the road for a pair of contest next week, first at UMass Lowell on Thursday, followed by a game at Vermont on Saturday
