Blount Puts Up 25 Point Double-Double on Senior Night, But Women's Basketball Drops OT Heartbreaker to NJIT

BALTIMORE -- Anna Blount poured in 25 points and tied a career-high with 13 rebounds, but a pair of free throws with 1.1 seconds left gave visiting NJIT a 77-76 overtime win on Thursday night at The Peake.

Jaden Walker tallied a career-high 16 points in the contest to go along with nine rebounds. Trinity Palacio added 12 points while Carmen Yánez chipped in 11 points of her own

The program honored Blount, Palacio and Maryama Turkstra with a ceremony prior to the game for Senior Night

How it Happened:

  • NJIT started the game with a 6-0 lead, but Palacio hit a three to score first for the Retrievers.

  • After a media timeout, Yánez made a layup to cut the lead to 10-9 NJIT.

  • Yánez hit a three with 2:18 left in the first quarter to tie NJIT 14-14.

  • The Highlanders ended the first quarter going 11-14 at the field with a 78.6 FG% taking a 23-15 lead.

  • Jaliena Sanchez opened the second quarter with a three.

  • After the teams traded buckets, Blount had four points to take the first lead of the game 29-27 Retrievers.

  • NJIT hit a three and got fouled to take back the lead 39-35 to end the first half.

  • Walker hit a layup in the third quarter to end a 10 point run for the Highlanders, 45-37 NJIT. 

  • After a timeout, Anne Adewumi entered the game and hit a jumper to make it 49-41 NJIT.

  • Palacio hit a layup to go on a Retriever 9-0 run to end the third quarter 53-50 NJIT.

  • Walker hit a layup to take back the lead in the fourth quarter, 56-55 UMBC.

  • After a 20-2 UMBC run, NJIT took back the lead 64-63 with 1:11 left in the fourth.

  • Walker hit a layup to tie the game 65-65 with 14.5 seconds left leading to overtime.

  • Blount hit a three in overtime to take the lead 69-67.

  • Walker reached her career-high with a late bucket to make it 71-69 UMBC.
  • The Highlanders quickly tied the game, but Blount hit a three with 1:21 left to give UMBC a 74-71 lead
  • The teams then traded layups before NJIT got fouled with one second left and made both free throws to win 77-76.

UMBC will be the #6 seed in the America East Playoffs and will play at #3 seed Vermont on Friday, March 8th.
