Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Tregoning, Mike Doughty Enjoy Career Games as Men's Lacrosse Routs Mount St. Mary's, 18-6

UMBC outscores the Mount, 11-1, over the final 19 minutes.

Emmitsburg – UMBC senior attackmen Brian Tregoning and Mike Doughty enjoyed career games as the Retrievers outscored host Mount St. Mary's, 11-1, over the final 19 minutes and triumphed, 18-6 at Waldron Family Stadium.

Tregoning netted a career-best six goals, while the elder Doughty brother tallied career highs in points (7) and assists in the contest.  UMBC evened its record at 1-1 on the young season.

Head Coach Ryan Moran addressed the play of the two team captains, along with tri-captain short-stick defensive midfielder Kyle Hoff. "They performed on the field like they perform in practice every day. They are consistent, reliable and extremely competitive."

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the Mount opened the scoring at the 4:48, UMBC rattled off four consecutive goals to take a 4-1 lead after 15 minutes.
  • Tregoning netted the first two (5:08 and 7:27), while junior midfielder Jordan Galloway (9:49 and 12:30) made a pair of nice cuts and finished after receiving crisp passes from Mateo Brown and Mike Doughty.
  • The Mount sliced their deficit to 4-3, but back-to-back scores from Tregoning and Dane Hall restored UMBC's three-goal advantage at the 6:51 mark of the second quarter.
  • The hosts finalized the scoring at the 10:32 mark of the half.
  • After an exchange of goals to open the third quarter, the Mount would have five possessions to cu the deficit to a single goal, but Retriever senior goalkeeper Jayson Tingue made five of his eight saves in that span to hold the hosts at bay.
  • At the 10:48 mark of the third quarter, senior attackman Mateo Brown converted on a left-handed drive from the right alley to start a 4-0 run.
  • The Retrievers scored four times in a span of 3:19 as they took an 11-5 lead after 45 minutes. The Doughtys combined on the ninth goal, as Kevin fed Mike for his first goal of the season at the 11:48 mark. Mike Doughty and Tregoning tallied within a 45-second span as the Retrievers continued their precise passing.
  • UMBC would extend the run to 9-0 with Brown netting a pair of man-up goals in a 15-second span in the fourth minute of the fourth quarter.
  • In the final 1:43, sophomore Connor Chick (EMO) and junior Tyler Barnett tallied their first collegiate goals.

Brown (3g, 1a) tallied his sixth career three-goal game, while Galloway (2g, 1a) and junior midfielder Josh Tang (1g, 2a) also recorded 3-point games.

Tregoning's six-goal effort was the first in four seasons. UMBC's last six-goal effort was turned in by Ryan Frawley versus High Point on March 7, 2020.

UMBC outshot the Mount, 51-27 and 13 of UMBC's 18 goals drew assists. "Coach (Nick) Griffin has the boys dialed in," said Moran. "They are playing well, sharing the ball. We had a nice flow in the last 30 minutes and that was nice to see."

Senior face-off specialist Zach Dudley continued his outstanding work early in the season.  He won 15-of-23 draws as the Retrievers captured 17-of-27 in the game.

Mike Doughty has nine assists through two games and 46 in 34 career contests.

The Retrievers stay in-state to face Towson at Unitas Stadium on Saturday, March 2 at noon.
