Staunch Defense Leads Women's Basketball to 53-43 Win Over New Hampshire

BALTIMORE – Carmen Yánez scored a game-high 15 points, as the UMBC Women's Basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 53-43 win over Visiting New Hampshire on Sunday at The Peake.

The Retrievers held UNH to just 19 points and eight made field goals through the first three quarters.

With victory, UMBC clinched a spot in the America East playoffs which begin on Friday, March 8th

How it Happened:
  • Jaden Walker scored the first four points of the game as UMBC took an early 4-0 lead
  • UNH would rally and eventually tie the game at 6-6 seven minutes into the contest
  • Anna Blount would hit a pair of free throws and Walker would hit a late layup to give the Dawgs a 10-6 lead after the first
  • It was 10-8 nearly four minutes into the second when Yánez drained a three and Blount immediately followed with a steal, layup and the foul to go up 16-8
  • The Wildcats ended the run with a layup, but Yánez would hit another three to give UMBC a 19-10 lead with four minutes to go before the half
  • The Retrievers would extend the lead to 21-10 before UNH scored the final five points of the quarter to make it a 21-15 game at the half
  • The teams alternated points until Yánez hit back-to-back layups to give UMBC a 30-19 lead just over four minutes into the third, forcing a UNH timeout
  • The lead would grow to grow to 37-19 after three quarters after Yánez hit a late three
  • The Retrievers held the Wildcats without a point for the final 7:47 of the third quarter
  • UNH would make a run in the fourth, cutting the advantage down to 7, at 47-40, with 46 seconds left, but UMBC would hit its free throws to hold on for the victory
  • Walker finished with 12 points and seven boards, while Blount added nine points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals
The Retrievers wrap-up the regular season on Thursday night when they host NJIT for Senior Night.
