Women's Basketball Erases 12-Point Deficit to Stun First Place Maine

BALTIMORE – The UMBC Women's Basketball team erased a 10-point halftime deficit to stun first place Maine, 67-59, on Thursday night at The Peake.

UMBC (9-17, 5-9 AE) used an 18-2 that spanned the second and third quarters to get in front of Maine (18-9, 11-2 AE) for good.

Anna Blount led the Retrievers with 17 points and nine rebounds, while Jordon Lewis tallied 12 points and Jaden Walker added 11.

How it Happened:
  • Maine held a 4-3 lead, until Trinity Palacio beat the shot clock on a layup and followed that up moments later with a three to give UMBC an 8-4 lead midway through the first quarter
  • A Carmen Yánez layup made it a 7-0 run before Maines scored five straight to cut the deficit to 10-9
  • The teams traded buckets until Yánez hit a buzzer-beating floater to send the Retrievers into the second quarter up 14-11.
  • The Black Bears hit their first four shots of the second quarter, including a pair of threes to take a 21-18 lead three minutes in
  • Paloma Iradier made a layup to end the Maine run, but the visitors answered right back with six straight points to take a 27-20 lead
  • Anna Blount hit a jumper to cut the deficit to five, but Maine went on another 7-0 run to take a 34-22 lead.
  • Yánez would once again beat the buzzer with a layup to send the Retrievers into the half down 34-24.
  • UMBC scored the first seven points of the third to cut the Maine advantage to just three
  • After a pair of Maine free throws, the Retrievers would score the next nine points to take a 40-36 lead six minutes into the half
  • The Black Bears cut the lead to 42-40, but Laura Lacambra and Blount made back-to-back layups to put the Dawgs up six late in the third
  • Maine would score the final four points of the quarter to cut the UMBC lead to 46-44 after three
  • The Retrievers held Maine to 2-12 shooting in the third, including 0-5 from three, en route to outscoring the visitors 22-10 in the frame
  • Jaliena Sanchez would hit a midrange jumper and Lewis followed with a three to give UMBC a quick 51-46 lead in the fourth.
  • Blount would score four straight to put the Dawgs up 55-46 with 5:44 left and force a Maine timeout
  • Walker would get an offensive board and putback with 3:30 left to make it a 59-50 game
  • The Black Bears would cut it to five with 30 seconds left, but the Retrievers wouldn't let it get any closer
The Retrievers have a quick turnaround as they host New Hampshire on Saturday at 1 p.m.
