Gassmann, Nicusan Continue Their Dominance at AESD Championships

Each swimmer earns gold on day three at VMI.

Lexington, Va. – Senior Dani Nicusan and junior Oliver Gassmann continued their dominance at the America East Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday.

Nicusan set a conference and meet record in winning the 100 yard breaststroke in a time of 52.57, while Gassmann broke a VMI pool record and captured the 100 yard butterfly in 46.94.

The win was the second of the meet for Nicusan and his eighth individual gold in four trips to the league championships. His swim of 52.57 is also a new UMBC record, smashing Leo Endres' mark of 54.16 in 2016.

Gassmann, the 2023 Swimmer of the Meet, earned his first solo victory in 2024 and his sixth in three championship meets.

UMBC captured one additional individual medal on the day, as freshman diver Andy Vines made his second trip to the podium by earning bronze in the 1-meter diving competition with a mark of 252.70.  He struck for silver in the 3-meter competition on Wednesday.

UMBC's 400 yard medley relay quartet of max Casey-Bolanos, Nicusan, Gassmann and Bode Neale placed second in the night's final event, just .15 seconds behind winner Bryant.

Neale placed fifth in the 200 yard freestyle.

The championships will conclude on Saturday with five individual events and the 400 yard freestyle relay finale.
