Nicusan, 200 Free Relay Squad Earn Gold on Day Two of Championships

The 200 free relay squad set a meet, conference, pool and UMBC school record.

Lexington, Va. – The Retriever men's swimming squad capped the second evening of competition at the 2024 America East Championships by racing to victory in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

In addition, for the second consecutive year, senior Dani Nicusan captured the 200 yard individual medley, besting his nearest competitor by over four seconds.

The quartet of Oliver Gassmann, Nicusan, Christian Coleman and Bode Neale set a school, conference and meet record by coming home in 1:19.49. They bested their own mark of 1:20.11 set in 2023, with Nicusan replacing Nik Weigelt in this year's edition. Nicusan and Neale both recorded splits of 19.64 to lead all swimmers.

Nicusan set a VMI pool record in the 200 IM at 1:46.36. Junior JJ Chapman earned fifth place in the event.

UMBC placed three swimmers in the top seven of the 50 yard freestyle, with Gassmann taking fourth (20.09), Neale capturing sixth (20.19) and Coleman following in seventh (20.20).

"What a tremendous way to end day number two," said Head Coach Matt Donovan. "These Dawgs are ready to go and excited to compete for the next two days."

Six Friday events are on the card for the third day of competition.
