Sanchez Pours in 20 Points as Women's Hoops Defeats Towson for the First Time Since 2010

Towson, Md. -- Jaliena Sanchez led the way with 20 points, three assists and had the game sealing steal with four seconds left to propel the UMBC Women's Basketball team to a 65-60 victory over host Towson on Wednesday morning.

The win snaps a nine-game losing streak to the Tigers, is the first win over them since 2010 and first on the road since 2009.

Jaden Walker and Jordon Lewis each had 13 points, with Walker adding eight rebounds. Talia Davis had 10 points and three rebounds.

How it Happened:
  • An early 9-0 run gave the hosts a 12-5 lead
  • UMBC would claw back into it and take a 17-14 lead into the second quarter after Sanchez scored the seven points of the quarter. L
  • Lewis opened the second quarter with a jumper and the teams exchanged baskets before UMBC went on a 7-0 run
  • After both teams went back and forth, Sanchez ended the first half with a layup to take a 36-25, into the break 
  • The Retrievers opened up a game-high 18 point advantage at 48-30 just 3:30 into the half
  • Towson would then get hot from the field and cut the Dawgs lead to 55-49 after three thanks to a half-court heave to beat the buzzer
  • Towson started the fourth quarter with a layup but Lewis made both free throws, 57-51 UMBC.
  • The UMBC lead was whittled one, 61-60, after a three with 2:38 left in the game
  • It would remain 61-60 until late when Sanchez split a pair of free throws to give UMBC a 62-60 lead with 15.4 seconds left
  • The Tigers went to the free throw line with 9 seconds left, but missed both free throws and an offensive put back before Walker grabbed the rebound
  • Carmen Yánez was quickly fouled and made both free throws with 05.2 left in the game. 
  • After a timeout, Sanchez stole the ball with 4 seconds left and hit a free throw to make it 65-60.
  • Sanchez missed the second free throw, but Walker grabbed the offensive board and dribbled out the clock to secure the win

The Retrievers will be back on the road to face Saint Francis on Sunday for a 2 p.m. game.
