Women's Basketball Routs Notre Dame of Maryland, 79-24, to Give Candice Hill First Career Victory

BALTIMORE -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team gave head coach Candice Hill her first career win in a 79-24 rout of visiting Notre Dame of Maryland on Wednesday night at The Peake.

Every UMBC player made at least one field goal, and the team was led by 15 point efforts from Jaliena Sanchez and Alaina Williams

Williams added nine rebounds (five offensive), while Sanchez filled the stat sheet with four steals, three rebounds and three assists.

How it Happened:
  • Jordan Lewis started the game off with a layup followed up by a three from Jaliena Sanchez, 5-0 Retrievers
  • After a 6-0 run by the Retrievers, Notre Dame hit a three of their own to cut the lead in half.
  • Carmen Yanez, who finished with a game-best seven assists, hit her first three of the season to make it 9-3 Retrievers.
  • After the teams exchanged a couple lay-ups the Retrievers led 13-5 at the first media timeout.
  • Sanchez hit back-to-back layups and UMBC led 19-8 after the first quarter
  • Tiara Bellamy made a layup to start the second quarter
  • Lewis hit her first three of the game to make it 24-8, UMBC
  • Kenya Ramsey, who totaled seven rebounds in the game, scored her first points as a Retriever before a timeout 28-8, UMBC
  • After the timeout, Notre Dame made a layup but Riley Donahue hit her first three to make it 31-10, UMBC
  • Laura Lacambra made a layup to end the first half 33-10, UMBC
  • Yanez opened the second half with a layup but Notre Dame responded with one of their own to make it 35-12.
  • The Retrievers went on a 15-0 run with Alaina Williams scoring 10 of those points to make it 50-12 UMBC.
  • Notre Dame took advantage of a foul and made both free throws but Yasmin Ott made a layup to make it 55-16
  • Notre Dame made a floating jump shot with three seconds left of the third quarter to make it 59-20 UMBC.
  • Lewis opened the fourth quarter with a layup and drew a foul but Notre Dame made a layup right after 62-22. 
  • Layla Marshall made a layup before a timeout to make it 69-22 UMBC.
  • The Retrievers went on a 9-0 run with less than a minute left of the fourth quarter with Lauren Thompson making a three 79-24 UMBC.

The Retrievers hit the road for the first time this season when they make the short trip to Loyola Maryland for a 5 p.m. tip-off on Sunday.
