Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball at Loyola

BALTIMORE -- Jordon Lewis and Jaliena Sanchez each scored 13 points, but a furious rally fell short as the UMBC Women's Basketball team fell at Patriot League preseason favorite Loyola Maryland, 54-46, on Sunday night. 

The Retrievers cut a 15 point deficit down to two, and it was within three midway through the fourth, but the Greyhounds held on.

The game was a homecoming for UMBC head coach Candice Hill, a Loyola alum, who was honored before the game.

How it Happened:
  • Loyola went on a 10-0 run right off tip-off
  • Lewis scored first for the Retrievers with a layup with 6:03 left in the first quarter to make 10-2 Loyola.
  • The Greyhounds answered right back with a three to make it 13-2.
  • At the end of the first quarter, UMBC trailed 18-3.
  • Carmen Yánez made the first three for the Retrievers under two minutes into the second quarter, 18-6 Loyola.
  • Lewis responded with a layup after but Loyola responded with one of their own, 20-8 Loyola. 
  • After a media timeout, Jaliena Sanchez hit a three to cut the Loyola lead to 20-11
  • Lauren Thompson made a three of her own to end the first half, at 27-18 Loyola.
  • Lewis made a three to start the second half 27-21 Loyola
  • Loyola made a layup but Talia Davis responded with a three to cut the lead to 29-24 Loyola. 
  • After the Greyhounds made a jumper and layup, Sanchez and Lewis made back-to-back layups to cut the lead to 33-28 Loyola.
  • Yasmin Ott hit a three to get the Retrievers within two points at 33-31.
  • After both teams went back and forth, Sanchez made a three, and it was 38-35 Loyola.
  • The Greyhounds made a jumper to end the third quarter with a 40-35 Loyola lead.
  • Davis hit a three with 8:25 left in the game to make it 42-38 Loyola.
  • Loyola responded after with a 4-0 run
  • Lewis made a floater to make it 46-43 Loyola before a media time out with 4:54 left.
  • Loyola would end the the game on an 8-3 run to to secure the victory.
The Retrievers return to action next Sunday when they host crosstown rival Morgan State at 2 p.m.
