Women’s Basketball Battles #18 Maryland in front of 2,306 Fans at The Peake

BALTIMORE -- A near record crowd of 2,306 saw the UMBC Women's Basketball team give #18 Maryland all it could handle in the first half, before the visitors pulled away in the second half to win 74-32 in the first game under new Retrievers head coach Candice Hill.

Graduate Student Jordon Lewis led the team with 10 points, three rebounds, two blocks, and an assist. Jaliena Sanchez had five points, three rebounds, and one assist while Talia Davis also added five points, two rebounds, and two steals. 

Freshman Lauren Thompson made her debut and hit her first three of her career at the end of the third quarter. Redshirt sophomore Tiara Bellamy made her debut as a Retriever adding two steals and a rebound. Junior Laura Lacambra also added four points and Graduate student Yasmin Ott added three points. 

How It Happened: 
  • The Terrapins took a 7-0 lead with a pair of layups and a three to open the game
  • Jaliena Sanchez responded with a layup to cut the deficit 7-2
  • After the media timeout, Talia Davis hit her first three as a Retriever to make it 13-6, Maryland.
  • After drawing a personal foul, Laura Lacambra hit both free throws to close the gap 13-8.
  • The first quarter ended 18-8 with the Terrapins going on a 5-0 run after a couple Retriever fouls
  • Lewis responded in the second quarter with her first three of the season after the teams went back and forth in fouls, 20-11.
  • Lacambra made a layup right after but the Terrapins responded right away with one of their own 
  • Yasmin Ott hit her first three of the season to cut the lead 22-16, Maryland
  • Lewis hit her second three of the game with 4:00 left in the half to make it 24-19
  • The Terrapins scored a couple of layups to take the lead 28-20.
  • Lewis hit a layup right at the buzzer cutting the lead by eight with 53 seconds left of the half.
  • After a turnover, Maryland responds with a layup of their own to make it 33-22 to end the first half. 
  • The second half opened with Maryland drawing a shooting foul but Davis responded with a layup 36-24, Maryland.
  • After the Retrievers drew a personal foul, Sanchez hit both free throws to cut the deficit by 10.
  • Maryland went on a 10-0 run to take a 20 point lead.
  • Lauren Thompson made her debut and responded by hitting her first three of her career with 1:26 left of the third quarter. 46-29
  • The Terrapins took control of the beginning of the fourth quarter going on a 7-0 run before Lewis made a layup to make it 59-31
  • Maryland took their largest lead of the game before a media timeout with 5:00 left in the game, 62-32 Maryland
  • The Terrapins went on a 12-0 run to end the game 74-32, Maryland

The Retrievers will host Notre Dame of Maryland on Wednesday November 4 at the Chesapeake Insurance Arena. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. airing on ESPN+.
