Women's Basketball Holds Iona to One Made Basket in First Half En Route to Blowout Win

Hamilton, N.Y. -- The UMBC Women's Basketball team held Iona to 1-24 shooting in the first half en route to a dominating 62-40 win on Saturday afternoon in the Third Place game of the Colgate Thanksgiving Tournament.

Jaliena Sanchez led all players with 16 points, four assists and added three rebounds. Jaden Walker was named to the All-Tournament team after another stellar outing, tallying 12 points, four rebounds and two assists.

Talia Davis was the third Retriever in double-digits, finishing with 11 points in only 15 minutes before fouling out, and Jordon Lewis added nine points and a game-high seven rebounds. Tiara Bellamy finished with eight points and five rebounds off the bench for the Dawgs.

How it Happened:
  • Davis opened the game with a three as UMBC opened the game on a 8-0 run
  • At the end of the first quarter, UMBC led 21-8 with five of Iona's points coming from free throws.
  • Yasmin Ott opened the second quarter with a layup with the Retrievers outscoring Iona 14-2, holding the Gaels to 0-14 shooting in the frame.
  • The Retrievers led 35-10, holding Iona to 1-24 shooting.
  • Sanchez made her first three of the game and followed it up with two free throws to make it 44-12
  • A Walker three-point play a few minutes later would give UMBC a game-high 33 point lead at 49-16
  • The Dawgs would eventually take a 53-24 lead into the fourth and cruise to victory from there.

The Retrievers will continue their five-game road trip with a short trip to Towson on Wednesday for an 11 a.m. game with the Tigers.
