BALTIMORE -- Nine different players made a basket as the UMBC Women's Basketball team held off a furious late American University rally to defeat the visiting Eagles, 50-45, on Wednesday night at The Peake.
The Retrievers held a 47-29 lead with 6:30 left before the guests cut it to four, 49-45, with just over a minute left. The Retrievers would get multiple defensive stops to hold on for the victory.
Tiara Bellamy and
Talia Davis each had ten points to lead the Dawgs, while
Jaden Walker had a game-high 11 rebounds.
How It Happened:
- After American took an early 7-2 lead, UMBC fought back and tied the game at seven and then nine
- Bellamy scored the final six points of the first to send the Retrievers into the second up 15-11
- Bellamy opened the second quarter with back-to-back layups to make it 10 straight for her
- Yasmin Ott and Alaina William then followed up with baskets of their own as the Retrievers went on a 8-0 run to take a 23-11 lead.
- Walker made a layup to increase the Retriever lead 27-15 before a timeout in the first half.
- Both teams exchanged free throw opportunities to end the first half, as UMBC led 29-19 at the break.
- Davis made a three to open the second half, 32-19 UMBC
- American responded with a jumper but Jordon Lewis and Davis both made a layup to make it 36-21 UMBC
- Davis made a three after a media timeout with 3:31 left of the third quarter to give the Dawgs a 39-23 lead
- American made a layup but Lauren Thompson made her first three of the game to end the third quarter with a 42-25 lead
- An Ott three gave UMBC it's largest lead of the game, 47-29, with 6:31 left
- The Eagles responded with a 12-0 spurt, but Lewis made a layup to to end the run
- American made back-to-back layups to trail the lead to 49-45 with under a minute left in the game before the Retrievers got some stops to end the game.
UMBC will welcome Manhattan to The Peake on Sunday at 4 p.m.
