BALTIMORE – Graduate student forward
Meghan McKye scored two goals, but the UMBC women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision against the New Hampshire Wildcats on Senior Day at Retriever Soccer Park. The loss eliminated the Retrievers ( 5-11-1, 1-5-1) from America East Conference Tournament contention.
New Hampshire (11-3-1, 6-1 AE) never trailed as Abbi Maier scored just 9:17 into the contest to give the visitors an early lead. Maier took a feed from Elizabeth Finn on the right side and beat a couple of UMBC defenders before firing a shot inside the near post from seven yards out.
Meghan Guarante (10 goals) scored the first of her two second-half goals in the 48th minute as she was able to tap in an easy marker after a defensive miscue. Delaney Lappin was credited with an assist.
McKye got the hosts on the board with 29 minutes left as she headed in a cross from senior
Clara Looney to slice the lead in half at 2-1. Senior back
Lauren Reid initiated the play, finding Looney along the right corner on a free kick. Looney then sent a gorgeous cross into the box, and McKye directed a header into the lower left corner as UNH goalie Sally Rainey was caught out of position.
Guarante gave the Wildcats an insurance marker with under ten minutes left as she picked the pocket of UMBC senior defender
Alyssa Clearfield following a free kick. Guarante took one dribble and then fired a low shot into the lower right corner from the center of the top of the box.
The Retrievers answered just over a minute later to give themselves an opportunity for a comeback as McKye put in a corner kick off the foot of senior midfielder
Izzy Binko from point-blank range.
UMBC, which will conclude its season at NJIT on Thursday evening, could not score an equalizer in the match's final minutes.
UNH held a 21-7 advantage in shots.
