DAWG BYTES
  • The Retrievers earned a scoreless tie against No. 19 ranked Georgetown Tuesday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.
  • UMBC goalkeeper Emigdio Tormo Lopez was sensational. The junior goalkeeper made six saves, including several in spectacular fashion.
  • The Retrievers had some quality opportunities to cash the game-winner over the final twenty minutes. Still, they were denied by Hoyas' (5-3-4) keeper Luca Ulrich, who made several terrific stops for the visitors.
  • Junior forward Ryan Calheira had the first with 18:35 remaining as he got past the back line after receiving a through ball from senior midfielder Karl Quist-Therson. Calheira took aim at the far post, but his blast from five yards out was turned aside by Ulrich, who made a diving stop to his right.
  • UMBC avoided disaster with 17:15 remaining as the officials huddled and wiped away a Georgetown goal by Mitchell Baker, who was ruled offsides.
  • Tormo Lopez then made an incredible sliding save to deny Baker with just over 12 minutes left. Baker came down the center and sent a rocket from the top of the box. Lopez managed to get a foot on the attempt and deflect it just wide of the right post for a corner kick.
  • The Retrievers had an unbelievable sequence of chances with 8:30 left as Ulrich came up with two saves. Junior midfielder Joseph Picotto hit a screamer from the top of the box that Ulrich turned aside. The rebound came to senior midfielder Ismailcan Usta, who had the entire net with Ulrich on the ground. However, Usta's follow from point-blank range was returned to Ulrich. The kick save deflected to graduate student Hans Nesheim on the right side of the box, but the defender sent a third chance over the crossbar.
  • Graduate student defender Hans Nesheim is tied for 11th in the country with seven assists on the season.
  • Calheira is tied for 7th in the America East with four goals.
  • The Retrievers are second in the league in points (5.0 per game) and have taken a league-high 15.83 shots per game.
