Women's Soccer Puts Forth Valiant Effort In Home Loss to George Washington on Sunday

BALTIMORE, MD – The UMBC women's soccer team put forth a valiant effort before dropping a 2-0 decision against the George Washington Revolutionaries, on Sunday afternoon at Retriever Soccer Park.

The game was scoreless until sophomore forward Isabel Kelly converted a penalty kick in the 51st minute after UMBC freshman defender Emily Hiney was whistled for a foul inside the box. Kelly was able to beat Retriever junior goalkeeper Abbey Cowles with a hard shot to the right corner of the net.

Junior forward Kelly Poole added an insurance tally with 10:19 remaining as the visitors caught the Retrievers on a counterattack.  Poole gathered a long lead pass from sophomore midfielder Aoi Kataoka and beat Cowles with a low shot into the left-corner of the net.

UMBC (2-4) had a couple of quality chances in the second half but were just a bit unlucky. Graduate student forward Natasha Munro collected a bouncing ball in the box and had an opportunity to score from point-blank range, however, GW graduate student keeper Rose Hemans was able to get a hand on Munro's attempt with 26:45 left.

The Retrievers looked as if they had gotten the equalizer with 23:30 remaining when sophomore midfielder Misa Kasparcova (3 shots) tapped a free kick into the left-side of the net. However, the linesman ruled that the Dawgs were offsides on the play.

Senior forward Meghan McKye (3 shots) had a pair of early first half opportunities but was unable to finish them.

GW (3-1-1) held a narrow edge in shots, 18-16 while the hosts took six corner-kicks compared to three by the Revolutionaries.

Cowles made six saves while Hemans made nine.

UMBC will host High Point on Thursday at 7:00 p.m.
