BALTIMORE – UMBC men's soccer recorded its second consecutive shutout of the weekend, blanking visiting Howard, 2-0, to earn first place in the UMBC-Navy Classic.
Forwards
Alek Wroblewski and
Loc San scored in a ten-minute span midway through the second half and the UMBC defense limited HU to six shots. Junior midfielder
Ty Stroud earned assists on both goals.
The Retrievers improved to 3-0-1, while Howard slipped to 0-3-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Emigdio Tormo Lopez made his first career start for the Retrievers and earned a two-save clean sheet.
"Howard played really hard, they were really resilient and played with a lot of energy," said Head Coach
Anthony Adams. "It took everything we had at the end to pull off a win in front of a great crowd."
San, who scored a goal in each game, earned Tournament Most Valuable Player honors. Wroblewski, seniors Taylor Calhiera (1g, 1a vs Liberty) and Will Forby (1g vs. Liberty) and sophomore defender
Lasse Kelp also made the All Tournament Team.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- UMBC outshot HU, 12-3, in the first 45 minutes, but could not dent the net. Wroblewski's effort in the 6' just slid by the right post, while Howard goalkeeper Benjamin Hoeslii made a diving save of a William Forby 25 yard free kick in the 41'.
- San and Stroud were part of a group of five players that subbed in for the Retrievers in the 70'.
- Just 38 seconds after coming onto the field, Stroud hit a diagonal ball down the left wing to a racing Wroblewski. The senior beat Hoeslii with a hard low shot inside the far right post from ten yards out.
- In the 79', Stroud captured the ball and hit a bomb from 30 yards out. Hoeslii got a piece of the blast, but San pounced on the rebound and buried it from the 8-yard line.
- UMBC held Howard without a shot for the final 28 minutes of the game.
